Nintendo has recently confirmed its attendance at Gamescom 2023, which will be its first appearance since 2019. Gamescom organizers announced Nintendo’s attendance in late April. Based on this development, many believe that Nintendo will have something substantial to present during the show. It’s worth noting that the Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Pikmin 4 will both have been released by the time of the event, so it’ll be quite interesting to see what Nintendo has in store for us this time around.
While the reasons for Nintendo’s attendance have not been specified, many speculate that the company might reveal something related to hardware. The all-conquering Nintendo Switch is already six years old, and there are suggestions that the Japanese company should start talking about what’s next. Its sales numbers are down 21 percent year-on-year, which begs the question if Nintendo Switch has hit its maximum potential, and whether a next-gen successor is required.
Nintendo’s decision to attend Gamescom is timely, coming off the heels of the cancellation of the E3 games conference by its parent company ReedPop. E3 was set to take place in June, and many are glad to see that Gamescom will remain, even as an in-person event.
