The long-awaited weapon featured in the first Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 2 trailer is now here, and players can try it out for themselves at last.
After being teased for several weeks, the Lock On Pistol has officially been added to Fortnite. The current Fortnite season was released in early March, and the modifications made to the Battle Royale island added a completely new setting to the game. Most players were delighted with new POIs as soon as they hopped into their first match; they were particularly impressed with Mega City – the futuristic cyberpunk-themed metropolis. Many of the Chapter 4 Season 2 Battle Pass skins followed this same aesthetic, and so did the powerful and frantic weapons available this season.
In the first season trailer, there was a weapon that caught many players’ eyes. The Fortnite community dubbed it the Smart Pistol due to its unique ability to follow an opponent’s trajectory while moving. This weapon both scared and excited fans at the same time because it seemed to fit right in with the cyberpunk vibes of the season, but also it looked strangely overpowered. It kept being teased in promotional images such as the loading screen for the Fortnite Renegade Runner Cup, but weeks went by and there was still no official mention of this weapon being added to the game, which was certainly odd.
With the release of the Week 6 quests, Epic Games has finally added this weapon to Fortnite. It seems that it’s not actually called the Smart Pistol but the Lock On Pistol. Just as its name indicates, it locks onto enemy players and tracks their movement to guarantee a much more accurate shot at them. It’s a recent release, so some fans still haven’t had the chance to test it out for themselves, but players are definitely fearful of how it might affect the competitive scene, with many commenting that it seems like it will give players the opportunity to use aimbot without being banned.
Previously, it was already possible to come up with overpowered pistols in Fortnite, but activating pistol Reality Augments while carrying the Lock On Pistol might be a powerful and dangerous combination. The truth is that it’s unknown just how much this pistol is going to shake things up for both casual and competitive players. Surely Epic Games will keep an eye out and pay attention to the feedback the community gives to ensure that Fortnite remains as fun as ever and that there isn’t a frustrating balance issue that turns out like last season’s broken Shockwave Hammer.
Fortnite is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
